I created a podcast that spent a few weeks on Apple Podcast’s top 10 chart in the design category.

Client: Evanmade Studio

Sector: Media & Entertainment

Role: Brand identity, Sound design, Audio production, Web design, Promotion, Music, Interviewer and host

Overview

One Thing Real Quick was a one-season podcast with 18 episodes that ran for about 6 months in 2019. The show explored creativity and featured guests including photographers, industrial and graphic designers, musicians, TV writers, filmmakers, artisans, and more.

This was an accumulation of many of my many disciplines. I created the project to stretch those skills as well as to connect with other creatives who I looked up to and admired. I designed the brand identity elements, created the music, made the website and promotional materials, and managed the roll out and production schedule, interviewed guests, edited each episode, and worked to grow the audience.

The show's branding was built on simple colors, shapes, and clean, bold typography.

The episodes

This was an audio only podcast. Here are a few select episodes. You can access the full library here.

I had created all the music for the podcast, including the intro music and the music that rides under the interview, different tones and styles for different emotions. On the episode above, featuring Dustin Lau, I was given access to his music to assemble the music bed with.

Leslie Chapman’s episode was one of only a few episodes that was conducted in person.

Cover Artwork

A podcast’s cover essentially serves as the primary visual identity touchpoint. It’s not necessarily the logo, but it might as well be. One Thing Real Quick featured a bold yellow cover art. This was designed to stand out in a sea of competing artwork and for the podcast’s name to be legible even when displayed at small sizes. I also created a simple animated version of the cover art that I was able to use in some of the promotional materials (which are displayed below).

I generated a cover for each episode which was built on an easy-to-follow system that leveraged the brand colors, type, and elements from the main cover, as well as showing icons that represented the episode in some way.

Promotion

Most promotion was done on the show’s own Instagram page. I created motion templates that allowed me to quickly make new promotional videos. I also generated a few unique videos so that the page was filled with a mix of different style content.

Here are some video promos. Sound on.

Show Success

My objectives were really focused around strengthening my connection with other creatives as well as pushing myself to learn more about this medium. I wanted to use some of the creative muscles that my work weren’t quite letting me use. I wasn’t expecting much in terms of response, but the response was great and very encouraging.

In the first week, the show reached the top ten on Apple Podcast’s charts, specifically in the design category. One Thing Real Quick was also featured on Apple Podcasts’ New and Noteworthy in the Arts, Design, and Visual Arts categories. The show landed a sponsor right away. One Thing Real Quick got a handful of really flattering reviews and earned a 4.9 star rating.

In the first week I followed a specific promotion strategy and was thrilled to reach #5 on the design charts on Apple Podcasts.
