Packaging assignment for a 3D Graphic Design course

The assignment was to create a package design for Urban Farming. They are an organization that turns vacant lots into gardens and gives the food to the community (link). This included redesigning the logo and coming up with a product to package.

The product I chose was a window garden. This product includes a bag of soil and some packs of seeds.

In order to follow the model that U.F. is built upon, I decided to make the box so that it would actually work as the ‘planter box’. The package is built like a milk carton with a square top. The welded bottom and the waxy material allow the box to hold soil and water. It also acts to inspire the consumer to plan other things in recycled objects such as yogurt cartons and coffee cans, thus being a small scale version of the gardens planted by Urban Farming.

The box is a cube and is designed to work as a billboard when stacked. The boxes can be arranged showing different sides to create a display using nothing more than the product package itself (see the bottom image). In order to achieve this, I worked to turn the bar code into an image as well (a watering can pouring water).

Completed June 2009

A whole new way to present golf tees: in an appealing package.

If you golf, you’ve probably seen the packaging most golf tees come in, it’s a small plastic bag with a card stapled up top and a hole so it can neatly hang on a peg in the pro shop. When it came to Lucky Tee’s all maple golf tees, the norm just wouldn’t do.

For this project, the client wanted something fresh and new. Something to set their superior product apart from the zip-loc baggies. This package was the solution they were looking for. The package takes up no more room on the pegboard than the bagged tees, and it can also be set on a shelf, making it easy to merchandize.

Completed April 2007

Designer Shay Spalding helped with concept and I saw the project through revisions, and manufacturing.

Spring tees may or may not advance your game, but the package will advance your sale.

This package system was designed by myself, Shawn Murdock and Steve Davis. This was done while I worked as art director for Koviss Golf America. When Lucky Tee Golf changed their name to Koviss, the company wanted to revamp the low-impact packaging to a more consumer-ready package. This design represents a larger package with a simple and easy to recognize color-to-size scheme.

This package is also a cost efficient design; the graphics can be changed to hold other products from ball markers to divot tools all in the same die. The three-lobed hanging hole allows for a vertically straight hang regardless of product weight.

Completed October 2007
